Golden Globe fashions, real world style

Once upon a time, I regularly attended black-tie fashion-industry affairs. Yes, I fasted before these events, obsessed about what dress would look best, worried about which was the most flattering way to wear my hair, and--being a jewelry editor--stressed the most about what accessories to don. It was all great fun. Flash forward a few years and, I never thought I'd say it but: it's also pretty fun to sit on a couch in Connecticut in terribly unflattering jammies, accompanied by a bag of baked Lays, and serve as an armchair quarterback to the Golden Globes... which is exactly what I did on Sunday night.

However, while you can take the girl out of the fashion editor role, you can't take the fashion editor mindset out of the girl. Thus, my take on the red carpet fashions, and predictions on what those fashions mean for all of us in the real world this year.

First, this is clearly the year of nudes, dark blue and emerald green... especially, I predict, navy blue. This classic color looks so fresh and enticing that, in the past 48 hours, I've completely revamped the planned new color scheme for my bedroom. Farewell eggplant, hello Navy...








Second, welcome to the Emerald City. How can you not love this most striking of jewel tones? Kudos to those who risked pairing rich green gems with various colors (albeit with mixed results), but the emerald-against-black mix works best. Absolutely stunning...




Finally, the most inspiring look from Sunday night had nothing to do with Navy or emerald, and everything to do with confidence, sophistication, and gracefulness. Seriously... did you see Elle Macpherson? She was a knock-out in both her glamorous nude-colored gown for the awards, and her shimmering gold dress for the after parties. Not sure which I adore most: the multi-color statement bracelets that she paired with both, or how beautifully real she is. Macpherson, at 47, blew away starlets half her age and is, officially, my new personal inspiration.
